Para-liturgical Services

Legion of Mary

Leading Para-liturgical services is a meaningful apostolic work for Legionaries in the Legion of Mary, offering opportunities to gather the faithful in prayer outside of the celebration of the Mass while still remaining closely united to the Church’s liturgical life. These services are especially valuable in settings where a priest may not be available or where additional moments of communal prayer can strengthen faith and devotion.

In this work, Legionaries help organize and lead prayer services such as the Rosary, Scripture reflections, Liturgy of the Word services, novenas, and other approved devotions. These gatherings may take place in parishes, homes, hospitals, nursing facilities, or other community settings. The Legionary approaches this role with reverence and fidelity, ensuring that all services are conducted in accordance with Church guidance and under proper authority.

A key aspect of this work is preparation. Legionaries prayerfully plan each service, selecting appropriate readings, prayers, and hymns that will foster a spirit of recollection and participation. They aim to create an atmosphere where those present can encounter God in a personal and communal way, even outside the Eucharistic celebration.

This work also requires sensitivity to the needs of the participants. In some cases, those attending may be elderly, ill, or unable to attend Mass regularly. Through paraliturgical services, Legionaries help sustain their spiritual lives, offering them comfort, structure, and a sense of belonging within the Church.

Throughout, Legionaries remain conscious that they are not replacing the sacred liturgy but complementing it. Their role is to lead others toward a deeper appreciation of the Mass and the sacraments, always encouraging participation in them whenever possible.

Supported by prayer and carried out in union with the Blessed Virgin Mary, this apostolate reflects the Legion’s mission to sanctify souls through humble service. By leading paraliturgical services, Legionaries help keep the flame of faith alive in communities, drawing people closer to Christ through shared prayer and devotion.
