Every Catholic in good standing is welcome.
The difference between active and auxiliary membership
is simply how you participate — both are full, meaningful ways to serve.

Serve through action: Active Members

Active Membership in the Legion of Mary involves a dedicated, organized, and deeply spiritual commitment to the Church’s missionary work. Active members, called Legionaries, serve Christ through the nurturing guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, maintaining a well-rounded life of prayer, discipline, and active evangelization.

At the core of Active Membership is a weekly apostolic commitment, where each member is assigned a specific task approved by the Legion and carried out in pairs. These apostolic tasks often include visiting the sick, the elderly, or the homebound; reaching out to those who have drifted away from the faith; supporting parish ministries; teaching catechism; and engaging in person-to-person evangelization. Through these efforts, Legionaries bring Christ’s presence into everyday situations, witnessing through both words and actions.

Equally important is the weekly Legion meeting, which serves as a crucial source of unity, accountability, and spiritual growth. Held in a respectful and orderly manner, the meeting features communal prayers, spiritual readings, guidance from the Spiritual Director, and reports on completed apostolic work. This structure ensures that each member is supported, shaped, and encouraged in their mission.

Active members also commit to maintaining a consistent daily prayer routine, which includes reciting the Catena found in the Tessera (prayers of the Legion). They aim to develop virtues such as humility, perseverance, obedience, and charity, seeking to follow Mary’s example of faith and openness to God’s will. They aim to develop virtues such as humility, perseverance, obedience, and charity, seeking to follow Mary’s example of faith and openness to God’s will.

Fidelity and perseverance are key to Active Membership. Legionaries are called not just to serve but to serve consistently, dedicating their time, energy, and talents each week. This ongoing commitment promotes spiritual growth, strengthens faith, and cultivates a strong sense of community among members.

Ultimately, Active Membership in the Legion of Mary is more than just participating in an organization; it is a calling to holiness and service. Through their dedication, Legionaries become vessels of grace, bringing hope, compassion, and the message of the Gospel to those they meet, all for the greater glory of God.

Serve through prayer: Auxiliary Members

Auxiliary Membership in the Legion of Mary is a crucial and essential part of the Legion’s mission, focused on the powerful and faithful offering of prayer. While auxiliary members may not take part in the active apostolic works of the Legion, their role is equally important. They provide the spiritual foundation upon which all Legion activities depend.

Auxiliary members dedicate themselves to daily recitation of the Legion prayers (Tessera), which includes the  Rosary—and meditating on the mysteries of Christ’s life. Through this consistent and devoted prayer life, they connect with Our Lady’s mission of bringing Christ to the world. Their prayers support, empower, and bear fruit in the efforts of active members working in the field.

The Legion of Mary has always emphasized that no apostolic work can produce lasting results without prayer. In this way, auxiliary members are the unseen strength of the Legion, quietly supporting every visitation, every act of evangelization, and every work of mercy. Their faithfulness in prayer invokes God’s grace upon the Church, the Legion, and the souls being helped.

Auxiliary Membership welcomes those eager to serve but who may not be able to attend weekly meetings or complete active assignments. It is especially beneficial for individuals whose circumstances—such as family responsibilities, health issues, or age—limit their availability for external work, yet who still wish to make a meaningful and impactful contribution to the Church’s mission.

This membership is a genuine act of prayer. It demands dedication, perseverance, and a strong trust in the unseen work of grace. Auxiliary members are united in spirit with the entire Legion, fully sharing in its mission and spiritual benefits.

In a world that desperately needs God’s grace, the prayers of auxiliary members are not secondary—they are vital. Through their quiet yet steady intercession, they help open hearts, strengthen faith, and bring countless souls closer to Christ. Their role reminds us that the success of every apostolic effort begins and is sustained by prayer.
