The Mission of

the Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is one of the most lively and spiritually rich lay apostolates in the Catholic Church—a quiet force of prayer, service, and evangelization that has transformed many parishes worldwide.

A Humble Beginning with a Global Mission

The Legion of Mary was established in 1921 in Dublin, Ireland, by Frank Duff, a layman with a deep love for Our Lady and a bold vision: to motivate ordinary Catholics to actively practice their faith and bring Christ to others. What started as a small prayer meeting quickly grew into an international movement found in nearly every part of the world.

Inspired by the spirit of the Blessed Virgin Mary—her humility, obedience, and zeal—the Legion encourages its members to become tools in her hands. Through a well-rounded life of prayer and action, Legionaries aim to grow in holiness while addressing the needs of the Church.

The Apostolate: Prayer in Action

At its core, the Legion of Mary is an apostolate—faith put into action. Members dedicate themselves to weekly meetings and active service that connect them directly with people in need of spiritual support and human kindness. These efforts include:

  • Visiting the sick, elderly, and homebound
  • Reaching out to inactive Catholics
  • Supporting parish evangelization efforts
  • Teaching the faith and encouraging devotion
  • Offering companionship and hope to the lonely

Every action is rooted in prayer, especially the Rosary, making the Legion’s work deeply spiritual as well as practical. It is evangelization not just through words, but through presence, kindness, and authentic Christian witness

A Gift to Every Parish

Parishes that have a Legion of Mary presence often experience a quiet but powerful renewal. Legionaries extend the reach of the parish beyond its walls, bringing Christ into homes, hospitals, and hearts. They support clergy by engaging in pastoral outreach that might otherwise be difficult to sustain.

The Legion is especially valuable because it forms committed lay leaders—men and women who take ownership of the Church’s mission and live it out with dedication. It strengthens community bonds, deepens faith life, and fosters a culture of service and evangelization.

The Praesidium: Where It All Begins

The smallest unit of the Legion is called a Praesidium, a local group that meets weekly for prayer, formation, and assigning apostolic work. The beauty of the Legion is its accessibility: a Praesidium can be started in any parish, anywhere.

Even more exciting is its flexibility across all stages of life. Praesidia can be formed for:

  • Juniors (youth) – helping young people grow in faith and confidence
  • Young Adults – channeling energy and idealism into meaningful service
  • Seniors – offering wisdom, experience, and steadfast dedication

This intergenerational dimension makes the Legion a vibrant and inclusive apostolate, capable of engaging the entire parish community.

A Powerful Evangelization Force

In a world that desperately needs hope, the Legion of Mary serves as a powerful tool of evangelization. Its members go out, two by two, bringing Christ to others with bravery and compassion. They remind us that evangelization isn’t just for a few—it’s the mission of every baptized person.

Starting a Praesidium is like planting a seed of renewal in a parish. With prayer, commitment, and trust in Our Lady’s guidance, that seed can grow into a thriving apostolate that touches many lives.

The Legion of Mary is more than just an organization—it’s a way of life. Rooted in prayer, supported by community, and fueled by love, it remains a vital force in strengthening the Church, one soul at a time.
