“Called to be apostles in the world, members of the Legion of Mary serve in union with Our Lady to bring Christ to every soul.” – Matthew 28:19 · “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

Over 85 years of faithful service

The Legion of Mary has been active in the territory now served by the Arlington Senatus for over 85 years, demonstrating a long-standing and consistent tradition of lay apostolic work in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“From its humble start, the Arlington Senatus has grown from a few praesidia
in a handful of parishes to hundreds of praesidia serving numerous dioceses
across hundreds of thousands of square miles.”

What does membership look like?

1. Gather weekly for prayer & mission

The smallest unit of the Legion is called a Praesidium — a local group that meets weekly for prayer, formation, and assigning apostolic work. Every meeting opens and closes with the Legion’s prayers.

2. Go out in pairs to serve

Members dedicate themselves to active service that connects them directly with people in need — visiting the sick, elderly, and homebound; reaching out to inactive Catholics; supporting parish evangelization efforts.

3. Pray Daily

Every action is rooted in prayer, especially the Rosary, making the Legion’s work deeply spiritual as well as practical. The Tessera unites every Legionary around the world in the same intention each day. Active members pray the Catena daily, and auxiliary members pray the full Tessera daily.

4. Grow in faith alongside your group

Praesidia can be formed for juniors, young adults, and seniors — making the Legion a vibrant and inclusive apostolate, capable of engaging the entire parish community across all ages.

Ready to learn more about joining?

Starting a Praesidium is like planting a seed of renewal in a parish. With prayer, commitment, and trust in Our Lady’s guidance, that seed can grow into a thriving apostolate that touches many lives.
