OCIA and CCD

Legion of Mary

Assisting in OCIA and CCD is a valuable and formative apostolic work for Legionaries in the Legion of Mary, focused on nurturing the faith of both new and developing members of the Church. Through this ministry, Legionaries collaborate with parish clergy and catechists to help bring souls into a deeper relationship with Christ, always working in union with the spirit of Our Lady, who formed Christ in the hearts of others.

In the The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), Legionaries accompany adults who are seeking to enter the Church or complete their sacraments. Their role is often one of support and encouragement—serving as sponsors, small-group leaders, or prayer companions. They help create a welcoming environment, answer questions with humility, and witness to the lived reality of the Catholic faith. By their presence and example, Legionaries help candidates and catechumens feel that they are not walking the journey alone, but are being gently guided into the life of the Church.

In Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), which typically provides religious education to children and youth, Legionaries assist catechists in teaching the truths of the faith in a clear, engaging, and faithful way. This may involve helping in the classroom, preparing materials, leading prayers, or offering one-on-one support to students. Beyond instruction, Legionaries strive to model Christian virtue and devotion, helping young people to encounter not just the teachings of the Church, but the love of Christ.

In both OCIA and CCD, the work goes beyond imparting knowledge; it is about forming hearts. Legionaries approach this apostolate with patience, fidelity to Church teaching, and a spirit of charity, recognizing that each person is at a unique stage in their faith journey. Prayer underpins all their efforts, as they entrust those they serve to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Through this work, Legionaries participate in the Church’s mission of evangelization and catechesis, helping to build a strong foundation of faith in individuals and families. It is a quiet but powerful apostolate—one that contributes to the growth of the Church by forming committed, informed, and spiritually grounded Catholics.
