In this work, Legionaries bring a small portable collection of approved spiritual reading—often carried in a box, bag, or “barrow”—to homes, public places, or parish settings. These materials may include Scripture selections, lives of the saints, catechetical booklets, devotional guides and sacramentals. The Legionary offers these items to individuals and families for free distribution always aiming to match the material to the spiritual needs and interests of the person.

The personal contact that accompanies the Book Barrow is essential. Legionaries do not simply distribute literature; they engage in friendly conversation, offering encouragement and guidance while gently introducing the material. This approach helps ensure the literature is received with openness and is more likely to be read and appreciated.

Follow-up is an important part of the apostolate. Legionaries may return to offer new selections or to continue conversations begun during earlier visits. In this way, relationships are built, and the initial contact can deepen into spiritual engagement.

This work requires discernment and care, as Legionaries must ensure that all materials are faithful to Church teaching and appropriate for their audience. It also calls for patience, since the impact of reading may not be immediately apparent. Yet the Legionary trusts that God works through these efforts, using the written word to touch hearts in ways that personal conversation alone may not.

United in prayer and carried out under the guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Book Barrow apostolate reflects the Legion’s mission to spread the Gospel in simple, accessible ways. By placing good reading in people’s hands, Legionaries help open minds and hearts to the truth, allowing grace to take root and grow quietly within.
